There were many new champions crowned at Sunday’s WrestleMania 34 and the pay per view as a whole was pretty good. Here’s a report on each match from WrestleMania 34 with a grade attached. John Cena vs. Undertaker
There was a time when Undertaker was the most feared person in the company and challenging him at WrestleMania was an honer. In recent years, Undertaker has slowed down and he seemingly retired last year. The return was quick and sad. Undertaker’s days inside the ring should have concluded at WrestleMania 30. Two of the biggest stars in WWE history delivered the worst match of the night. Grade: D
WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal
After seeing the battle royal, I hope WWE does not make this a regular match. There was such a lack of talent, that they went to NXT and found some superstars. They were not even big names from NXT as some of them have barely been on TV. The only real storyline was Sasha Banks and Bayley continuing to have problems. I am still trying to figure which one is the heel. Grade: C-
André the Giant Memorial Battle Royal
After WWE builds their WrestleMania card, they decide to take anyone left and toss them into the ring. Almost everyone in the battle royal deserves to be on a second tier show. It looked like the superstars did not know what to do and WWE’s directions were to make sure Matt Hardy is left standing. Even the end was strange as I thought Bray Wyatt was an entrant. Grade: C-
WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship:
The Usos (Jey and Jimmy Uso) vs. The New Day (Big E, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods) vs. The Bludgeon Brothers (Harper and Rowan)
The SmackDown tag team title match felt rushed. New Day and The Usos always tear the house down, but that was not the case at WrestleMania 34. This was all Bludgeon Brothers and they made the other men look like amateurs. This is not how The Usos wanted to spend their first time on WrestleMania’s main card. Grade: C+
United States Championship: Randy Orton vs. Bobby Roode vs. Jinder Mahal vs. Rusev
This one never clicked. The best part was the entrances. If there are any takeaways, it is that Jinder Mahal deserves the United States Championship. I wish the promotion put this belt around Jinder before the WWE Championship as it would have made more sense. Randy Orton will return to the main event as Bobby Roode tries to succeed and Rusev continues to not get enough credit. Grade: C+
WWE Raw Tag Team Championship: Cesaro and Sheamus vs. Braun Strowman & Nicholes
There were so many guesses as to who would be Braun Strowman’s partner and it ended up going to a fan named Nicholes. In what is probably a first, the new tag team champions consists of a giant that should be Universal Champion and a 10 year old that has a bedtime of 11 PM. It was short, strange and somewhat worked. Grade: B-
Universal Championship: Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns
The fans were chanting “this is boring” and all I could think was once it was over, we will never have to see this again. Brock Lesnar scored a surprising victory and we will likely see a rematch. This was similar to any Lesnar match, as he hit a bunch of German suplexes before getting the win. Roman Reigns was left a bloody mess, which might have helped add excitement. I must say, Reigns kicked out of too many F5s. Lesnar might have hit his finisher around six times, which is more times than a beast needs to hit their go to spot. Grade: B-
WWE Championship: AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
Talk about a bummer. I had so much hope for this match, thinking that they would save WrestleMania if it was tanking. It was almost the opposite as the match never seemed to get going. The final spot was cool and that was about it. This was not even a great technical match and I was almost nodding out as we got deeper in. The best parts were the entrance and Shinsuke Nakamura turning heel. I knew these two would meet again, just not with Nakamura as the heel. Grade: B-
Tournament final for the vacant WWE Cruiserweight Championship: Cedric Alexander vs. Mustafa Ali
When given time, the cruiserweights usually deliver and that was the case for Cedric Alexander vs. Mustafa Ali. They were on the pre-show and there was plenty of time to showcase their skills. Either would have made for a good champion. Now that Cedric has the belt, we will see if 205 Live continues to improve. Grade: B
RAW Women’s Championship: Alexa Bliss vs. Nia Jax
We did not have to worry about Mickie James, as Nia Jax eliminated her in a matter of moments. If Nia’s mauling of Mickie taught us anything, it was that Alexa Bliss was in trouble. Bliss tried, but she is not Nia. I liked how the two worked the big person – small person dynamic. Plus, Nia finally won a belt that I thought was coming a year ago. That was a hell of a title run by Bliss. Grade: B
Daniel Bryan and Shane McMahon vs. Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn
One of the tag teams did not seem near 100 percent. Shane McMahon showed lots of guts and some craziness by going out there with all his recent medical issues. People only cared about Daniel Bryan here and rightfully so. Four years ago, Bryan did the impossible by winning two matches to become champion. After battling Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn for most of a year, Bryan and McMahon seemed to finally be done with that pair. Grade: B
Kurt Angle and Ronda Rousey vs. Triple H and Stephanie McMahon
There was lots of uncertainty heading into the mixed tag team match as we never see Stephanie McMahon compete, Kurt Angle’s body is trashed and Ronda Rousey is still new to the pro wrestling game. Everything went right and WWE really helped sell Rousey. My only issue is that Stephanie got more offense than she probably should have against a former UFC champin. Still, WWE has a star in Rousey. Grade: B+
Intercontinental Championship: The Miz vs. Seth Rollins vs. Finn Bálor
What a way to open WrestleMania. All three men gave their best and this is how to start a show. It gets fans excited, but leaves some room for the rest of card to possibly steal the show. With Brock Lesnar still holding the Universal Championship, the Intercontinental Championship has become the top prize on RAW. In a sense, Seth Rollins is now the guy to beat. Grade: A
SmackDown Women’s Championship: Charlotte Flair vs. Asuka
After watching this one, it felt like WrestleMania 30 all over again. The crowd was shocked when Asuka’s streak ended; just like Undertaker and Brock Lesnar in the very same arena years ago. We all knew Asuka had to lose at some point; I am just not sure if fans expected it at WrestleMania 34 or to be via submission. These talented ladies will be running the show in a few years. I could almost see female superstars main eventing the biggest show of the year if it is a repeat of what Charlotte and Asuka did. Grade: A
