Young Adult (2011)

When Young Adult was released, critics didn’t know what to make of Charlize Theron’s character. Diablo Cody’s film about a vain ghostwriter who goes back to her hometown and becomes obsessed with winning back her high school boyfriend (who is now happily married) made critical waves for having such an unlikeable character.

Interesting how an unlikeable man in film and TV is considered an “antihero,” but a character like Charlize’s somehow disturbs critics. This film is worth seeing for the cringe-worthy humor, fantastic acting from Theron and Patton Oswalt, and rare opportunity to see a female antihero.
