On Monday, the U.S. State Department issued a travel warning to all U.S. citizens, instructing them to avoid travel to several cities in the Philippines.
In the warning, Americans are advised to avoid all non-essential travel to the city of Marawi, Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago, which includes the southern Sulu Sea.
The travel warning was issued due to “terrorist threats, insurgent activities, and kidnappings.”
The Department of State has said that the travel warning “stretches from the southern tip of Palawan, along the coast of eastern Sabah, Malaysia and the islands of the Sulu Archipelago, up to Zamboanga City, Mindanao. The U.S. Embassy requires U.S. government personnel to obtain special authorization before traveling to Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago.”
Over the past year, terrorists have rocked the Philippines, including detonating a bomb in 2016 that killed 14 and injured 70 others.
The State Department advises all Americans to visit their travel website to obtain any information, but should not plan on traveling to the region, unless for essential business-related purposes.
