Starbucks bacteria

A disturbing report out of the UK has found fecal coliforms in 3 of out 10 Starbucks iced drinks that were tested. The BBC consumer affairs Watchdog program found bacteria at Starbucks and also at two other chains, Costa Coffee and Caffe Nero.

Costa Coffee was the worst offender as seven out of ten drinks “found to be contaminated with bacteria found in feces.” It’s a reasonable expectation of consumers to buy a feces free drink and apparently all threes of these coffee chains failed that simple test. This is alarming as this bacteria is a source of human disease.

“These should not be present at any level — never mind the significant numbers found,” Tony Lewis, the head of policy at the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, said.

Starbucks and Coffee Nero said they are conducting their own investigations into this matter. Costa Coffee said as a result of this investigation, it has “updated its ice-handling guidelines” and was “introducing new ice equipment storage.”
