Bayleen Whale

A huge sea monster washed up on Hulung Beach on Seram Island, Indonesia. The beast was oozing red fluid, and nobody knew what it was. Now, scientists believe they’ve identified the creature as a baleen whale.

Biologist Alexander Werth of Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia identified the creature as a “baleen whale.” “There is lots of stuff in the ocean that we don’t know about — but there’s nothing that big” that remains unknown,” Werth said in an interview.

Original reports indicated the sea creature might be some kind of large squid.

Biologist Dr. Karen Kalumuck explains what baleen is and what baleen whales are.

Watch:

The whale was in an advanced state of decomposition, which explains its strange look. The cause of death is still unknown, but the whale could have been struck by a ship or spent too much time in warm water, leaving it open to contracting disease.

Whatever the case, it’s not every day you get to see a bayleen whale up close!
