easter cross

Easter, and the preceding Holy Week, is a special time for Christians. It is an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the death and resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ. There are so many moving Bible verses that apply to Easter, so we decided to pick our top 13.

13 Bible Verses For Easter

The following Bible verses play a necessary part in understanding the meaning behind Easter for believers.

John 11:25-26

Jesus resurrect

“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

In this teaching, Jesus revealed what belief meant for his disciples, as well as the power over death that Jesus embodied. When we celebrate Easter, we are celebrating Christ conquering death for all people.

Matthew 26:19-22

Last Supper

“The disciples did as Jesus had told them and prepared the Passover meal. When it was evening, Jesus and the twelve disciples sat down to eat. During the meal Jesus said, ‘I tell you, one of you will betray me.’ The disciples were very upset and began to ask him, one after the other, ‘Surely, Lord, you don’t mean me?’”

At this moment, Jesus announces his coming fate on Good Friday.

Matthew 26:31

“Then Jesus said to them, ‘This very night you will all fall away on account of Me. For it is written: ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.””

Jesus announces the future for his followers, and what will happen to Christians after he is crucified.

Luke 24:2-3

Jesus empty tomb

“And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.”

When Jesus’s tomb was discovered to be empty, this was the most joyous of news. It meant that Christ had not died, but had, in fact, risen to join his Father.

Matthew 27:50-53

“And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split. The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus’ resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.”

The verses captures the moment when Jesus Christ finally “died” on Good Friday, only to rise on the third day.

Mark 16:1-8

Jesus tomb

“When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?” But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.”Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’ Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.”

These verses show what happened on Easter Day when Jesus’s followers tried to honor his body, only to discover it was gone.

Luke 24:46-47

Jesus resurrection

“The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name.”

This verse demonstrates the everlasting truth of Christ’s resurrection.

Romans 6:8-11

Jesus Christ lamentation

“Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.”

In these verses, Paul talks about the truth of Jesus Christ’s resurrection and what it means for all who believe.

Isaiah 53:4-5

“Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.”

Without the sacrifice that Jesus Christ made for us, we would never be able to have everlasting life!

Romans 10:9

Jesus Christ savior

“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

All that’s needed to be saved is to believe in Jesus!

Philippians 2:5–11

“Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus. Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and become obedient to death — even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

The example of Christ humbling himself and obeying God’s plan in order to be sacrificed to save mankind is something to think deeply about during Holy Week and on Easter Day.

Romans 8:34

“Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.”

It is through recognizing the pain and suffering Christ went through for us that we are all saved, if we choose to believe.

Romans 6:9

“We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him.”

There is an ultimate truth about Easter, and why Christians all across the world celebrate the day.

The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ is King. His death grants us eternal life, for which we should be ever grateful.

Amen.
