Tom Selleck Rosie O'Donnell gun control NRA 2nd amendment

Former talk show host Rosie O’Donnell is a known gun grabber and also a hypocrite given she used armed guards to protect herself. So it’s especially satisfying to watch this 1999 clip where Tom Selleck fended off a surprise attack by Rosie O’Donnell and schooled her on the issue of gun control. It’s especially terrific to watch because his message still applies today!

Tom Selleck Schools Rosie O’Donnell On Gun Control

This classic clip digs deep into the archive. It’s now been more than 20 years since Rosie O’Donnell tussled with Tom Selleck about gun laws and the 2nd amendment on her talk show.

The actor was caught off guard when she pressed on the gun issue because he was appearing to discuss his 1999 film The Love Letter. But Selleck didn’t let his frustration show – nor did he let the liberal talk show host get the best of him.

Rosie kicked things off by whining about the NRA. Well, the “Magnum P.I.” star was not about to let her bash the NRA unchecked.

Selleck clarifies he’s “not a spokesman for the NRA” before proudly sharing that he was a member as a kid, a “junior NRA member”. He even credits his junior NRA membership with teaching him firearm safety at a young age.

Rosie continues to push on the need for stricter gun laws to which Selleck calmly replies, “Rushes to pass legislation at a time of national crisis or mourning, I don’t think are really proper.”

His very rational response only serves to incense Rosie further. Sensing her mounting frustration, Selleck tells Rosie that what she doesn’t seem to realize is that she has a “very one-sided view of the facts”.

The Christian actor attempts to calm her by relaying “I understand how you feel”. He also adds, this is a “really contentious issue, probably as contentious, and potentially as troubling, as the abortion issue.”

2nd Amendment

As Rosie starts blustering about assault weapons, Selleck lays it down:

Do you really think that the 2nd Amendment is in the Constitution to guarantee hunting and target shooting? Do you really think that?

After Rosie steels herself from that blow, she retorts with her view of the 2nd Amendment which she says is so we can have “muskets when the British people come over in 1800” not so we can have “assault weapons in the year 2000.”

She then pushes one last time, “but I’m wrong?”

In response, Selleck simply shakes his head and closes his mouth and looks away from her.

It’s clear the actor realized there was no having a rational conversation with the loudmouthed talk show host.

It’s amazing to see how calm and collected Tom Selleck remains as he puts Rosie O’Donnell in her place on the issue. Check it out:

Rosie O’Donnell Recalls Clash With Tom Selleck Over Guns

Earlier this year, Rosie O’Donnell reminisced about clashing with Tom Selleck over gun control. She told PEOPLE, “I think it’s just the first time that I ever challenged a celebrity.”

Obviously this confrontation stuck with her as she admitted, “Every other one I was nice to. If they said, ‘Please, let’s not talk about my divorce or my recent drug addiction, drug rehab,’ I would do what they asked.”

59-year-old O’Donnell regrets the incident and wishes she had handled the matter differently. In her interview, she called Selleck a “kind man, who, for the rest of his life, has to be associated with me and that one event.”

One thing is certain, the “Blue Bloods” actor did not let the surprise attack do any damage. He held his ground on air and came out on top with a highly successful career.

“Rushes to pass legislation at a time of national crisis and mourning, I don’t think are really proper.”

He is 100% right! Let the left yell and scream while people like Tom Selleck use facts and reason to stop gun grabbers in their tracks.

Thankfully there are a few shining stars in Hollywood who think differently from the rest of the flock.

Be sure to tell others about this! It’s as applicable today as it was back then.
